MSAD #51 District Newsletter - September 28, 2023

From the Superintendent

This is the second in a four-part series around the district's 2023-24 Strategic Priorities. This week I'll provide more detail about College and Career Readiness, one of the four priority areas of the Strategic Plan.

College and Career Readiness is the meat and potatoes of the Strategic Plan. In order for all of our students to be prepared for their future, MSAD 51 schools have a responsibility and obligation to ensure that we provide academic rigor and a wide range of academic offerings. Our educators are tasked with creating environments of respect and rapport, establishing a culture for learning, managing classroom procedures, managing student behavior, organizing physical space, setting instructional outcomes, demonstrating knowledge of content, demonstrating knowledge of students, designing coherent instruction, designing and using student assessments to inform student learning, communicating with students using questioning and discussion techniques, engaging students in their learning, and demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness in meeting all learning needs.

In order to support our educators and staff in meeting student academic needs with the demanding expectations as outlined above, each school and district department is charged with developing an annual Site Improvement Plan (SIP). At the district level, this year's academic focus areas include reviewing best practices in writing, vertical articulation of the mathematics curriculum, and data analysis to inform interventions and other academic follow up. At each school, these improvement plans focus on responding to these overall questions:

What should students learn? (Standards and Curriculum)
How do we know they’re learning it? (Assessments)
What do we do when they’re not learning it? (Interventions)
What do we do when they already know it? (Extensions)

2023-24 District Student Flu Clinic

MSAD #51 will be having student influenza vaccination clinics on:  Thursday, October 26 at school.

Please keep an eye out for more details and school specific online registration links from each school!

This year we are doing an “in school” student flu clinic for grades 4-12 and after school flu clinic for preK-3. We will be partnering with Northern Light Home Care & Hospice to provide this clinic to our students.  Although the vaccine is provided at no charge, there is a cost to administer the vaccine so we appreciate it if you include accurate insurance information during registration. There is no out of pocket cost and those without insurance will be vaccinated as long as they have the appropriate online consent form completed. Children presenting with an incomplete form will not receive a vaccine.

  • Please take a minute to read the Vaccine Information Sheet.
  • On the clinic day, remind students to dress to allow access to the upper arm.
  • You must register each child online separately using the appropriate school link.
  • If you need a translated form or are unable to complete an electronic form, please let the school nurse know by Friday, October 20, 2023 and we will send a paper form home.

For more information about flu and the vaccine go to www.maineflu.gov or call Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention (Maine CDC) at 1-800-867-4775, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.
