From the Superintendent
As we move toward the end of the second week of school, I want to comment on the positive energy and vibes of our daily routines as we all settle into the new school year. Today we welcomed 32 Pre-Kindergarten students and on Tuesday we greeted 174 members of the incoming Class of 2035 (Kindergarten).
As one student remarked when I was visiting the school today during the mid-day lunch and recess activities, "There's an endless number of people!" It may feel that way when you're between the ages of 4-8 years old, and perhaps it's starting to feel that way for adults, too. With a student population of over 760 students at Mabel I. Wilson this year, the school has grown by more than 200 students over the last 6-7 years, requiring 14 modular classrooms to be installed outside the main building. Whereas we have made these spaces as comfortable and conducive to learning as possible, they are a continuous reminder that we have far exceeded the school's capacity and that a long-term plan is not just a nice idea, but a necessary one.
For three years, the district has been studying and actively developing plans for a new school to accommodate project enrollment increases for the next decade. Having first debunked the 2009 studies showing declining enrollment, updated enrollment reports completed in 2016, 2019, and 2022 clearly indicate continued enrollment growth. On September 19, the Board of Directors will vote whether to send a $73.9 million bond to voters on November 8 for a new primary school to be located at 80 Gray Road in North Yarmouth. The proposed new school would educate students in grades PK-2 and would be surrounded by 76 acres of beautiful terrain, including woodlands and running brooks.
Two public informational sessions have been scheduled for Tuesday, September 27 @ 6:00 PM in the GCA auditorium and Wednesday, October 12 @ 6:00 PM in the North Yarmouth Community Center. More information on this project can be found at the New School
page on the district's website.
On an unrelated note, please join me in acknowledging today's passing of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. All things considered, she was a remarkable woman who served as a source of stability and strength for the British people during her 70-year tenure. Her loss will surely be felt for years to come.
