Since the 1950s, schools across the United States have participated in many different emergency response training drills, including air raid drills, fire drills, and lockdowns, among others. Traditionally, schools across the country have used a procedure known as “lockdown,” which essentially meant locking the school building and classrooms and having students and teachers take shelter in their classrooms. As times have changed, the protocols have changed too. The MSAD #51 Board of Directors recently acted upon the recommendation of the MSAD #51 Safety & Security Committee and has adopted the ALICE procedures, offering age-appropriate options that will allow our students and teachers to be better prepared if a crisis situation occurs. It has become apparent from school violence events over the last two decades that both staff and students need options to help deal with a threat while that threat is occurring. While the topic of safety can be uncomfortable to discuss with children, ALICE is designed to prepare students for emergencies, if they occur.

If you would like to learn more about ALICE click this tutorial for an overview: https://nav360.link/alice-360
  1. What is ALICE? An overview of the strategies.
  2. Staff Training: What is the staff training format and content?
  3. Parent Resources: How can you speak to your child about ALICE?
Additionally, there were two important presentations shared at this week's Board meeting on the topics of school safety and bullying prevention. I would encourage you to view these presentations below for more information about our district's current practices and future plans in these two areas:

On a different note, each year we encourage our staff to nominate their colleagues for the annual Employee of the Year award. We had over 40 nominations for this year's award, with five finalists (see below) making it to the final round. At the district's annual Staff Celebration earlier this week, GHS Math Teacher Doug Pride Jr. was named the 2022 Employee of the Year.  Mr. Pride was nominated for being an extraordinary colleague and jumping in wherever he is needed. He is unfailingly polite and professional to all. Doug is a highly regarded teacher, coach, and mentor to our GHS students.  His nomination form said, “ Doug is patient, kind, steady, and a good listener.  His words are meaningful and powerful - they inspire results and empower people to reach their full potential.” Mr. Pride's colleagues refer to him as a true expert teacher who knows how to inspire even the most challenged math student.  He is recognized as a talented athlete, tutor, EMT, and an amazing musician. When duty calls, Mr. Pride steps up and is 'Greely' to the core. We are proud of you, Mr. Pride, and wish you the best in retirement!

Regards,
Jeff Porter
