From the Superintendent
COVID cases are on the rise, something that I'm sure is not news to anyone. Over the last three weeks, we have seen our case numbers rising here in MSAD 51 schools, with 210 students and staff reporting that they tested positive for COVID during this timeframe. Our daily attendance for students has remained between 90-95% since the April break, but our staff absences have been higher, with 10-18% of our staff out on any given day over the last several weeks. We have been struggling to staff our schools and are doing our best to maintain continuity of learning for students.
If you or someone you know would be interested in serving as a paid substitute in our schools, please contact Fran Prentice at 829-4800 or email@example.com. We are considerably understaffed every day and have a significant shortage of available substitutes, so please consider helping if you are at all interested and available. You can commit to as many--or as few--days per week as you are able and willing to offer. Substitutes will also be needed again in the Fall when school reopens, so let us know if you are available next school year, too.
This is a reminder that the best way to reduce the spread of COVID (or the flu) is to stay home when symptoms are apparent and report positive COVID cases HERE. Our nurses have returned to pre-COVID protocols where they assess each student who presents symptoms at school and uses their medical discretion as to whether or not they should stay at school or go home. Please defer to our nursing staff as they make decisions based on what is best for your child and the school community, especially in light of the state's ending of pooled testing this week.
I have been asked if the district is planning to return to required face masking this year. The short answer is that there have been no serious discussions about this topic and we plan to maintain mask-optional status, as approved by the Board of Directors in March. I have noticed an increase in optional face masking over the last week, and I would encourage anyone with concerns to feel comfortable wearing a well-fitting mask while at school. As a reminder, students and staff returning after testing positive must wear a face mask through day 10 after symptoms first appear.
Finally, the state is providing free COVID test kits to all students and staff. Each building will be working with their families and staff regarding the dissemination of these test kits. To keep your family and the entire school community healthy, please test when needed and provide any positive test results to the school.
